  • My Row-Along Today!

    My day is here!!

It is always fun to try and come up with something when a theme is presented to you. When Marian from Sew it Seams first talked about “Once Upon A Time or Nursery Rhymes” for the Row Along, Hickory Dickory Dock sprang to mind, but once I got down to the wire of what I was REALLY going to do, I chose Two Little Dickie Birds instead.  Once again some great prizes are being offered to those who comment.

I was looking through my children’s old nursery rhyme book and found this rhyme about two little birds.  Somehow it struck me right then and there that was what I had to do.  The pattern is available at Payhip for free until October 15, 2019.

Two Little Dicky Birds, sitting on a wall.

One named Peter, one named Paul.

Fly away Peter, fly away Paul.

Come back Peter, come back Paul.

At this point, it isn’t quilted.  I am thinking of making a quilt with it including more blocks.  Here is the setting that I think I will use.  Just have to make four more blocks!  Designed this setting with Electric Quilt.  Very handy!

Every year Northcott is so generous for giving fabrics to all the designers for their Row-Along designs.  Check out what they are giving away below!

In the pattern, instructions are included to construct your own wall as shown in the illustration below.  I decided that I would go with the bricks.

Don’t forget to comment below if you want to be entered to win this prize.  Love EQ, it is a very big help in designing my quilts and Dickie Birds is one of them.

NOTE! There may be a problem with Rafflecopter trying to register for the prize.  Marian is working on it

Here are the three rows I have made for past Row-Alongs.  “Tea for Two” and “Angels We Have Heard on High” were both made with Northcott fabrics.  If you are new to my blog, the patterns are also available in my  Payhip store, just click on the picture.

  1. Thank you so much for the pattern to Little Dickie Birds!! I had never heard this rhyme before!!

  2. Two Little Dickie Birds is your theme! What sweet little birds! I had a canary when I was young and his name was Dickie Bird!

  3. Love those Dicky Birds – your block is lovely! Thank you for sharing! Makes me want to run out and make it …but first to go fabric shopping!!! Love the setting you designed!

  4. Such cute birds. I grew up thinking they were blackbirds. I don’t know if that was the way the poem was read to us or because of those cartoon crows, Heckle & Jeckle. As for the them… I not sure because like many things the Catholic church changed mideval stories to reflect Christian themes as in Peter & Paul. If I had to guess it would be you may need to say goodbye to friend or family but eventually they come back into your life or as the seasons change we say goodbye to each one yet miss the weather or memories but as life goes on they each return. Those are my guesses. I would like to know the real meaning but couldn’t find it in a short period of time I allowed. Thank you for sharing. Now I can’t wait to see what you put in the other boxes of the new quilt.

    • I never thought about that. Almost all nursery rhymes had some kind of basis in the faith or history, Ring Around the Rosy was about bubonic plague. Someone else said the names she heard for Dickey Bird as a child were Jim and Jack. I will have to do a little research. Working on Humpty Dumpty right now, but only have the drawing, have to figure out the paper piecing for it.

  5. Never heard of the Dickie Birds! I do love paper-piecing though, so nice to learn a new rhyme!! Thanks for being a part of the Row-Along!!!

  6. Two Little duckie Birds! I am so glad that I participated this year and found you. So cute and something that I will definitely make someday.

  7. Two Little Dickie Birds is a great theme! I haven’t heard this one in a long time. I don’t think it’s Mother Goose, so it doesn’t get as much play, but I used to do a fingerplay with kindergartners with it. Thanks for a great block. I really like your plan and layout, too. What a great idea!

  8. I have never heard this one, but your row is beautiful!. I also like you setting diagram. Thanks for sharing this with us

  9. Your Two Little Dickie Birds are just darling. This is my favorite quilt/block so far in this blog hop! Thanks for sharing a fun pattern too!!

  10. I do like your two little Dickie birds. I used to sing this with both my kids and my grandkids. I plan on making a Once Upon A Story Quilt for my next to be born great granddaughter (she is due Dec.13) as soon as I’m able to sew again. Thanks so much for being part of the hop and sharing this sweet block pattern.

  11. I don’t think I’ve ever heard two little dickie birds before. It’s very cute and so is your row! Thank you so much for sharing!

  12. Two Little Dicky Birds!
I used to sing this song to my kids and put my hands behind my back and bring them out again!
    Beautiful block–thank you!

  13. My brother came home from grade school one day and told it to us. He learned it as, “two little birdies sitting on a fence, one name Jack, one named Jim.” The rest was the same. He had learned to do it with hand motions where one finger on each hand has a small piece of tissue or paper stuck to it. When they fly away, you change to a different finger without the paper. When they fly back, you switch back.

  14. I haven’t heard Two Little Dickie Birds in a long time. Thank you for the pattern and the memory. I did post a comment earlier but I don’t see it.

  15. Such a cute pattern Barbara, and a fun rhyme. Thank you for always creating and designing fun patterns and it’s wonderful having you participate in this year’s row along. I hope you will come do it again.
